If you've been in an accident or experienced an injury, you may be wondering if it's possible that you have whiplash. Any time our necks move in an unnatural way, whiplash is an unfortunate possibility. At Willow Bend Chiropractic, our Plano chiropractor has years of experience identifying and treating whiplash injuries. Read on to learn more about what to do if you think you may be suffering from whiplash.

What Is Whiplash?

Our neck and cervical (upper) spine are a complicated system of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Usually, our neck muscles are able to brace for impact. In an accident, this is usually impossible, since the impact is sudden and unexpected. This can cause the neck muscles and tendons to stretch farther than normal, causing whiplash. Symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, upper back pain, muscle soreness, dizziness, headaches, insomnia, mood changes, trouble concentrating, and vision changes.

Whiplash symptoms can last for weeks after the accident occurs. It's important not to just wait and hope that your symptoms will go away. They often get worse over time.

Seeking Whiplash Treatment

For most people, whiplash symptoms don't occur until between 24 and 48 hours after the aggravating incident. Like many medical issues, early detection is key. Whiplash treatment is most effective when it begins before symptoms set in. This means that if you think there's a possibility that you may have whiplash, it's important to seek chiropractic care, even if you aren't yet experiencing symptoms.
